For some time now we’ve been coming to the horrifying realisation that, despite engaging in what is commonly regarded as being an extreme sport, we’re more than just a bit soft in comparison to our forefathers. We came across these old men’s magazines from the 50s and 60s and apparently this is what we should have been up to this season if we were real men...

Started in 1872, back when science was still struggling to come to terms with concepts like dinosaurs, comfortable clothing and foreigners, Popular Science has spent the last 139 years trying to predict the future. In the early part of last century they really started going to town making some impressively wild snow sports predictions. Clearly the people of that era were made of seriously stronger stuff because some of the ideas they came up with were not much safer than being a Christian lion tickler in ancient Rome. Today we take a look at how accurate they were..

A couple of weeks ago while doing one of our in-depth consumer advice articles on the new Willy Finder one-piece suit range we made a passing prediction that the monoski might make a return next season. We were confident that this wasn’t going to happen because clearly monoskiing took the worst bit of skiing (the hard boots) and teamed it with the worst bit of snowboarding (going uphill) to create an incredibly freaky and pointless sport that no one in their right mind would want to do. E.g.
Unfortunately fellow blogosphereist, Misplaced Person got in touch afterwards to break the bad news that monoskiing is somehow still alive. So we decided to brave it and take a look at what’s been going down in the world of monosking...

The last two years have seen an unprecedented increase in space exploration themed marketing campaigns for snowboard companies. I've no idea why, but all of a sudden everyone’s at it.
According to some of the latest surveys about 25% of people in the UK and US don’t believe that man has landed on the moon. That’s a frightening quantity of mentals. I imagine they might also be a bit sceptical that snowboarders have now conquered space, but we have gathered together some photographic and video evidence that will blow their tiny little minds...

The Achilles heel of snowboards is that they are absolutely no use for going uphill, as a result we are forced to use one of the following options:
- Hiking – Always worth avoiding
- Chairlifts – Practical, but dull
- Helicopters – Awesome, but you do need a tame pilot and they’re always tricky to find
But there is another option, and we’re busy trying to find a way to afford one right now...

The season is over and unless you have the money to fly to a different hemisphere, or you have a local snowdome, your snowboarding days are temporally over. At least that’s the traditional perception, because it doesn’t need to be the way, you could always try snowboarding on a different surface.
This week we take a scientific look at the alternative off-season snowboarding surfaces to help you select the one that’s right for you. We’ve used a rigorous scoring system to determine which alternative surface is the most viable by tracking the two most important factors; usability and danger. Here's how the scoring works…
Surface Usability Factor
1 = It’s like riding a carpet through a Velcro factory
10 = It’s just like snowboarding
Surface Danger Factor
1 = As dangerous as snowboarding on a fluffy combination of cushions, feathers and kittens
10 = You will die

Question: What do the following all have in common?
- Jar Jar Binks & Star Wars
- Vomit & Jimi Hendrix
- Gorge Bush & Justifiable Warfare
- Butch Brady and Eric Sweet & snowboarding
Answer: They all managed to ruin something that used to be cool.
Over the years as snowboarding has become more mainstream it has lost its edginess. These guys came to late to be held fully responsible for this loss, but what they have managed to do is to shamelessly batter the definitive and final nails into the coffin. Watching these guys going to work on snowboarding is like watching your dad, who at one time was the coolest man in your universe, dance at a wedding. There is no sadder sight known to man.
So this article is not just about multiple snowboards it’s also about; Butch & Sweet - the most evil men in snowbusiness.

From the very moment snowboards were introduced to the world a small section of people went in to a frenzy of invention to try and improve things. Personally I’ve been pretty happy with the current idea which is why my plans for a jet powered snowboard have not got past the ideas stage. Some of these inventions have really taken snowboarding down some odd evolution cul-de-sacs. This series takes a look at all the odd designs that people have come up with and we start with powered snowboards.

Your average snowboarder spends weeks salivating over snowboard purchase. They spend countless hours reading through the magazine tests, foraging through the Internet for any semblance of good advice, asking friends to give their opinion even if they know nothing about snowboarding and when we finally enter the shop we will spend even more time perusing all the shiny new boards and asking the assistant for even more advice. In the end we buy the one with the pretty colours.
And that’s just the start of the long and complicated relationship we will have with our snowboard as we pass the initial stage of lust into a state of love. It follows closely the progress of any loving relationship, except of course we go out of our way to batter our boards which ‘apparently’ is just not acceptable with spouses or kittens. But at some point we will tire of our once-loved boards and they will eventually find themselves replaced by a new more colourful and shiny object of our affection.
So what happens at the end of a board’s life? It’s a question on almost no one’s lips, so in a complete about turn on the shameless seeking of popular topics we have been covering of late, here is an article with no topical relevance at all.

The Top Gnar guide to snowboarding cars
(Guaranteed to not include jokes about lorry driver murderers)
*Gnar is a shortened version of gnarly and it is therefore the abbreviated version of a shit bit of slang. I have only used it here because of the traditional requirement of a weak pun in the title.
Let's have a look at how we have cleverly pigeonholed the different ways you can mix snowboarding with cars.
